From the moment I picked up "The Way We're Working Isn't Working," I knew this would be the book to give the president of our company. Combining real-life examples with lots of research data, the authors confirmed what I've known all-along: trust your people, give them the tools and responsibility to do their jobs, and your company will profit from your approach. Every employee from the president to the janitor should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have in Every "Conscious Business" Book Collection, July 3, 2011

This review is from: The Way We're Working Isn't Working (Kindle Edition)
Well, to me, this book could well be a companion to the classic "Conscious Business" by Fred Kofman. Tony Schwartz is considered an authority on the field of personal productivity. Does he face the problem by procedural, getting-things-done-like stuff? Definitely not! Rather, he takes a more profound approach ... that of energizing people (not that I have anything against GTD, don't misinterpret me).

Tony's book goes through for areas for improving performance: Sustainability / Physical, Security / Emotional, Self Expression / Mental, Significance / Spiritual. By practical, mostly down-to-earth advice (there are a couple of practices that are a bit radical for today's workplaces, yet), he shows how we can energize ourselves, becoming more productive and happy at work.

    A Five Star recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to Basics - simple ways to improve individual and team productivity and energy levels., March 6, 2011
This review is from: The Way We're Working Isn't Working (Kindle Edition)
I first heard Tony on a HBR podcast. A few weeks later I picked up the hardcover print of this book (which was the subject of the podcast) at my favourite bookstore in Bangalore.

From page one onwards, I found myself connecting with Tony's observations. The way Tony and his co-authors present the research, data and the conclusions they draw from this, and the practical advise that they present in these pages is simply amazing.

The book identifies 4 core needs and sequences it as sustainability (body), Security (emotions),self expression (mind) and significance (spirit). The book takes the reader through the core principles for each of the needs. It uses the four quadrant method to effectively explain the principles and techniques to manage the needs. There are online tools to check our energy scores and use the techniques in this book to enhance our own productivity. Every chapter ends with Actions Steps, which helps to bridge the gap between theory and... Read more

Time Management Activities - Which Approach Works Best?

Time Management Activities - Which Approach Works Best?

We all know that learning and applying time management activities can improve our quality of life. But, which time management approaches work best? How do you choose from all the time management systems out there? And there are indeed a lot.A quick search online or in any bookstore will return scores of offerings. In my work as a professional coach, I have found the most powerful results come from integrating three of the major systems of time management. Each of these systems brings strengths, but each system practiced alone is not sufficient for truly successful time and life management.Combined, however, they form a powerful integrated approach to help you weave a balanced, productive, and fulfilling life. The major tenets of each approach are as follows.1.Managing your energy.Begin first by focusing on managing your energy, not your time.Exercising, eating right, and regular periods of rest and renewal will help your body recover from periods of stress. Moreover, these positive practices and habits provide you with greater energy and focus for engaging in work and play.(This approach is based upon the book, "The Power of Full Engagement").2.Managing your priorities.Identifying your highest values and priorities provides a powerful North Start for crafting a fulfilling life. With a firm understanding of what's most important, weekly and daily planning becomes a powerful way to create a life you love, instead of a survival mechanism for simply getting by.(This approach draws upon the works of Stephen Covey.).3.Managing to-do items.Build a system for triaging and executing on the incessant barrage of incoming stuff - email, phone calls, to-do items. With a solid system to catch all of your incoming stuff and nagging to-do items, you can use your brain to focus on more important things.(This approach comes from "Getting Things Done," by David Allen.).Each of these approaches, if practiced alone, provides some success, but will also leave some holes.Without managing energy, you will quickly burn out.Without managing your priorities, you will feel you're working hard, but getting nowhere important.Without managing to-do items, you will soon succumb to the incessant stream of "stuff" coming at you. But, combining these three approaches provides a powerful toolkit for moving beyond simply managing your time.Together they will help you proactively design a balanced and fulfilling life that fully aligns with what you value most.

Thriving During Tough Times Survival Tip #5 - Expand Your Comfort Zone

Thriving During Tough Times Survival Tip #5 - Expand Your Comfort Zone

The most important characteristic of survivors, in all contexts, is resiliency.Resiliency capacity is built through the management of energy.Nobody is immune to the effects of linear stress. We all must learn to create waves of stress and recovery. However, the waves are not meant to just maintain balance. They should be created in a way that expands your capacity and supports growth.Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, in their book titled The Power of Full Engagement, discuss the process of creating waves of stress and recovery in great detail and provide an effective framework for implementing it in your life.I highly recommend you review you review their work."To maintain a powerful pulse in our lives, we must learn how to rhythmically spend and renew energy." -- Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz.A key to resiliency in tough times is to improve your skills and make yourself more valuable in the changing marketplace. It is not about creating an air tight bunker in your current comfort zone.We must all pursue our best, be prepared for the worst, and expand our margin every day, every week, every month, and every year. This is only way that we will become more resilient for our future challenges and opportunities. When tough times hit, most of us immediately move into survivor mode.Unfortunately, our particular survivor mode resides in a comfort zone that likely was not proactively developed to suit the necessities of our tough times. Thus, the reactive survivor mode actually prevents us from maximizing our opportunities to survive and thrive in tough times."Because we are, by nature, proactive, if our lives are a function of conditioning and conditions, it is because we have, by conscious decision or by default, chosen to empower those things to control us." -- Steven R.Covey .All too often these days, people are reactively activating their survivor modes and compounding the effects of the realities of these tough times. To use Steven R.Covey's terminology from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, now is a good time to create more space between the stimulus (recession) and your response (your survivor mode). In that space, I recommend your commit to expanding your comfort zone in small but significant ways each day, each week, each month, and each year.Ask yourself. How can I improve my chances of surviving these tough times today, this week, this month, and this year? How can I improve my chances of thriving in these tough times today, this week, this month, and this year? How can I expand my comfort zone today, this week, this month, and this year? How can I effectively rejuvenate and recover from the stress of the above efforts today, this week, this month, and this year? Do this every day, every week, every month, every year and you will regularly meet your needs and feel confident about your future!© Copyright 2009 Jon L.Iveson, Ph.D.

Pisces Full Moon - Practical Intuition

Pisces Full Moon - Practical Intuition

The Pisces Full Moon on August 31 ends the month with our second Full Moon in thirty days. This is termed a Blue Moon and it is highly active. The planets are in a dynamic engagement creating a supportive system. For instance, powerful Pluto and action hero Mars are in harmonious energy flow to both the Sun and Moon. This influence can give us the capacity to dig deep to find the resources, power and drive we need to make our dreams real."A dream is a manifestation.Just like what you live is a manifestation, but a dream is quicker and easier to achieve, and not so troublesome if there's something you don't want." ~ Abraham. We want to be aware of our (positive and negative) energy, thought patterns and intentions. We want to turn worrying and complaining into prayer and affirmation. For instance, if we are worried about money, we are using our mind power to focus on "lack".The subconscious holds far greater power than our consciousness mind and believes whatever we tell it.The subconscious mind is like our Genie in a bottle."Your wish is my command." For instance, by stating this aloud.."I could certainly use more money." "I certainly expect more money to flow to me.".We are feeding the positive into our subconscious mind and beliefs. We are programming our brain for success. The Law of Attraction will respond to whatever we are broadcasting. The Law of Attraction does not care if it is a dream or fact.It matches whatever we are vibrating, stating and believing.Affirm aloud what you desire."I could certainly use more money." "I certainly expect more money to flow to me."."You cannot be less than you are now.You cannot achieve a vibration that is less than the vibration that you have achieved. That's why when someone achieves an empire and then something happens where it is lost or destroyed, they still have the vibration that they've achieved, and the empire will come back again-you see it all the time-because it is the vibrational status that the Universe is responding to, not the financial status." ~ Abraham. The Pisces Moon encourages "adaptable feelings." In Pisces, we are to dream, visualize, imagine, feel and care.Pluto is prompting us to use "practical intuition".In other words, we are to use both our logic and feelings to make our choices. Our feelings can be both profound and intense but not difficult. You can learn about aspects of your personality that are normally hidden from yourself.Pluto loves to dig deep to the core of our being and flush out past conditioning to be released and healed. We have the opportunity to make creative changes in Self, relationships and work. The Sun in Virgo invites us to get "down to earth" with our affairs, both personal and professional.Virgo brings out our "adaptable practicality." In Virgo, we can be analytical, industrious, systematic and reliable.Pluto and Mars in agreeable energy flow to the Sun can empower us to make positive changes in our life that do not disrupt, but allows us to evolve and grow.We can gain tremendous insights into ourselves and make successful changes if we desire.Mars in supportive energy flow to the Sun can bring new opportunities to be personally effective under this influence. You could experience a promotion, increased income and/or business expansion for the business owner.Mars can give us the edge and increase our physical vitality, to work hard and accomplish much.Action-orientated Mars is happy in his ancient home sign Scorpio. This is an awesome time to do yoga, Pilates and weight training. Our physical activity can build strength, flexibility and self-confidence.This will increase our health, well-being, vitality and personal success.Wherever Virgo is found in your natal chart is where you need to "analyze" your attitudes and ideas regarding the house affairs.Past theories may need rethinking. Our perfection lies in our imperfection.- How can you improve your health, well-being and vitality? - What talents, gifts and abilities do you want to utilize? - How can you improve your finances? - What new path are you ready to embark upon? - What makes your spirit soar?Just a few hours after the Pisces Full Moon, Mercury the messenger enters his home sign of Virgo on August 31 opposing nebulous Neptune. This aspect is encouraging us to find the balance between our material needs and our spiritual fulfillment. This creates a more rewarding journey. The first few days of September are not the time to make major choices or sign on the dotted line. However, rewards can be great if we wait.September 5 Mercury in Virgo harmonizes with Mars in Scorpio. This can give us the edge we need in our thinking and communication skills.Sharp thinking can have us in the driver seat feeling empowered and clear in the decisions we are now making. We want to practice being a casual observer. In this way, our energy can remain positive, proactive, free-flowing and clear. There are no obstructions to the magical manifestation abilities of those who remain neutral, balanced and centered.Abundance can flow freely to you, effortlessly and often. We need only to believe and trust in what our heart and inner voice are telling us.Pisces asks us to keep the faith! Believe that you deserve to have abundance, peace, love and Joy! We are worthy to have all the unlimited resources heaven has to bestow on us.Trust that all is moving in divine order.Never mind what-is.Imagine it the way you want it to be so that your vibration is a match to your desire. When your vibration is a match to your desire, all things in your experience will gravitate to meet that match every time. This is a wonderful Pisces Full Moon if we keep our feet firmly planted on the ground. We can reach for the stars and make our dreams come true. The cosmic message is that we can release whatever has been holding us back, including all sense of separation from Source and each other--All Are One.We are balancing the masculine and feminine.Women must stand in their truth and men must open their hearts. The personal dramas for many people are intense because we are finishing our third dimensional karmic lessons. We are graduating to a higher vibration on the 12.12.12.This is the Great Awakening, the shift of the ages, the dawn of a new era. This is why we came to Earth, why we went through spiritual boot camp----to be of service during this extraordinary transition.Align everything in your life with your mission and remember. "This blessed world, this third planet from the star we call the Sun, needs you and me to become all that she can be.We have the opportunity to bring to her a great gift, a gift for which she has been longing since our race first appeared among her dreams. The gift of ourselves.Awakened.Whole.Incarnate." ~ The Return of the Bird Tribes, Ken Carey.Love and Peace, Kelley Rosano.

Time Blocking - The Secret to Greater Productivity

Time Blocking - The Secret to Greater Productivity

There's nothing worse than staring blankly at your computer screen, with no idea how to finish a big project.Did you know there's actually an effective way to prevent that from happening? It's called "time blocking" and it's one of the best tools for making sure the time you spend working is productive. It's All About Cycles.Tony Schwartz, author of The Power of Full Engagement, talks about people as being "oscillatory beings in an oscillatory universe." What he means by that is that our energy flows in natural cycles of about ninety to one-hundred-twenty minutes.Eben Pagan, an enormously successful entrepreneur, carries this concept further in his "Wake Up Productive" products. He teaches his clients the art of time blocking in order to get more done. What these men have learned is that the secret to getting things done is to capture that cycle of energy.Does that simply mean working as hard as we can for a couple of hours at a stretch? No, there's actually a more productive way to get things done. Here's how to harness your energy effectively..• Use a timer. To help stay focused on the task at hand, set a timer for forty-five minutes. That's a reasonable block of time to work productively.• No distractions.During that block of time, turn off the distractions. No television, email, cell phone or chatting with friends.Give what you're working on your total focus until the timer sounds.• Take a break.Break up the blocks of time in which you're focusing with short breaks. After forty-five minutes, get up and walk around for five minutes.Get something to drink. But don't jump into another task or project, and stay away from those distractions we mentioned!• Jump back in.After a short break, set the timer for another forty-five minutes. This allows you to capture that optimum ninety minute cycle of productive energy.Work straight through until the timer sounds again, then get up and walk away.• Rest. After focusing completely on the task at hand for a full oscillatory cycle, it's time to rest a bit.Take a walk outside, lie down for a nap or eat a snack.A twenty minute break will refresh your mind and body and prepare you for another ninety minute block of productive work.• Repeat. You'll have to decide how many hour and a half to two hour time blocks you can manage in a day.Commit yourself to focusing completely on work, with appropriate breaks, for that many blocks of time, then stop working.Really.There's no point in staring at a computer screen or trying to be creative when you've moved beyond your natural energy cycle.Working Less, Doing More.It may seem contradictory, but you really will accomplish more in two or three ninety minute blocks of totally focused time than you used to accomplish in a full work day. Here's the paradox. working less time with complete focus nets more productivity than hours of unfocused struggling. You may be saying to yourself, "But aren't we supposed to be able to multitask?" It may sound ideal, being able to do a dozen things at once, but the truth is that when you focus on one thing, you do it well, in less time. And this doesn't just apply to big projects.Use time blocking to get emails answered, phone calls returned or proposals written.Anything that needs to be done can be done better with your complete focus for short blocks of time. So, are you ready to work less and accomplish more? Incorporate time blocking into your schedule and see for yourself how much more productive you become.

The Power of Narrative - How We Are Changed and Challenged by the Stories of Others

The Power of Narrative - How We Are Changed and Challenged by the Stories of Others

I work from home and usually have the radio on all day, sometimes just as background noise or to catch the occasional news story. This week, I walked into the kitchen to make lunch, and I heard an incredible talk given by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Nicholas Kristof at the Westminster Town Hall Forum.I stood silent at the kitchen counter for a full hour, my lunch uneaten, unable to tear myself away from the pull of the stories he was telling.Kristof has been writing for years about human rights abuses in Asia and Africa, particularly human trafficking and the genocide in Darfur. He has been the international voice of many women abroad who have faced unspeakable horrors and who have dared to tell their stories anyway. With his wife, also an accomplished journalist, Kristof wrote Half the Sky. Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.During his presentation, he spoke candidly of the urgent need to establish gender equity.Research has shown the the best way by far to fight poverty and extremism globally is to educate women and girls. The ripple effect of educating girls literally changes everything. It elevates the social and economic situations of individuals, families and neighborhoods.Entire villages have been lifted out of poverty in one generation when its girls have had a chance to go to school (there are several reasons for this, which Kristof goes into in his talk).Another thing really struck me about Kristof's speech. He pointed out that social psychology has shown that humans have very different base levels of happiness. Some tend to be more happy, some tend to be less, and all the things that we think will make us happier usually don't.And here's the paradox, as outlined by neuroscientist and author Jonah Lehrer..Although per-capita wealth has more than doubled in many industrialized nations over the last fifty years, levels of happiness have flat-lined.Even more dispiriting is the fact that, as countries become more prosperous, depression becomes significantly more common. To that paradox, Kristof offered this reminder to his listeners. there is one thing that has been found to universally elevate our base level of happiness, and that is "engagement with some cause larger than ourselves.".It is a difficult and cynical time we live in.People everywhere will tell you that there's nothing you can do, that we are removed from these stories and that they have no real effect on our daily lives. But our engagement -- whatever the cause -- shows something vastly different. that these stories matter a great deal, that we can be transformed by them, and that they have something to say to us, now, about who we are and who we will be.To listen to the entire audio presentation by Kristof, go to. http.//minnesota.Publicradio.Org/display/web/2009/10/13/midday2/.

The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz

The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz

I read a lot of self help books and this is one of the better ones.Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz move the emphasis from time management to energy management as the way to ensure we are always operating as best we can. They came to this conclusion by observing why some people succeeded in sport and other did not. What they found was that the best athletes had certain rituals that allowed them to recover when they were not performing.By building up their energy levels between matches they were able to defeat their opponent. This was most evident in tennis where certain players would go through a recovery ritual between points that gave them greater endurance during longer matches. So for the rest of us managing physical energy might involve taking more exercise or a change of diet. But it doesn't stop there. Then there is emotional energy. We need positive emotions to see us through times of extreme stress. This can mean improving listening skills, spending more time with people you care about instead of working late. Then there is mental energy-being able to visualize an outcome we want, doing yoga and meditation before going into the rush of each day. Finally there is spiritual energy, that is having meaning to our lives,a big picture of where we are going. The authors have made a point of avoiding any religious or spiritual references, as if they did I am sure they would have alienated some readers. They bring up the issues of passion integrity and honesty so there is some expectation you have a code of values you live by.This is where religion usually appears but had the authors aligned themselves with any one practice, their publishers might have got a bit anxious. If you do have a spiritual practice already, you can bring the authors recommendations into your rituals. So a great read. The biggest take away is building rituals into your life that allow you to recover and be fully engaged in whatever you do.Get it now.

Changing Habits - How to Create Healthy Habits

Changing Habits - How to Create Healthy Habits

Habits and how to create them. All right, let's learn about how to create habits that serve us in our lives and in our businesses.I did an interview recently with Tony Robbins, and one of the things that he said in the interview, and I'm paraphrasing, is that the quality of our habits and our rituals is the quality of our lives. Now what did Tony mean by this? He meant that if we don't have high quality habits and we don't make them into rituals, we don't focus on these things and create them consciously, that a bunch of other stuff will sneak into our life. We'll get distracted, our minds will get taken off on things, we'll worry about stuff, and we'll never get the important things done.On the other hand, if we habitualize all of the important things and actually create conscious rituals around them, then all the other stuff will take care of itself. In fact, the more high quality habits and rituals you create, the more it kind of squeezes out all of that other stuff that distracts you from your life.So the next question is how do you create habits? I saw an interesting piece of research recently that said that we only get a little bit of willpower in our lives and most of us just go through the same habitual things day-in, day-out, month-in, month-out, year after year.We kind of do the same thing, we think the same thoughts, and we have the same patterns with other people. In other words, we are creatures of habit, but most of us never learn how to change our habits with the little bit of willpower we do get.We don't usually focus it on changing our habits. And that's really the equation, that's the magic formula, is to take the willpower that we get and focus it on making a new habit. One of the things I learned from Tony Schwartz, the co-author of The Power of Full Engagement is that it's important to only create one new habit at a time.If we try to create more than one new habit, what happens is we get all stressed out and freaked out and we just fall into our old patterns and we never actually do it.So one new habit at a time, that's the rule, and what I've found works really well for me is to try to make the new habits earlier in the day. It's a lot easier to take a habit that you've all ready created and that's all ready running, and kind of move it a little bit later in the day than it is to create a new habit later in the day.So for example, if you want to focus your time in uninterrupted blocks, start by focusing the first hour of your day in an uninterrupted focused block, every single day where you're working on something important, make it a habit, make it a ritual. In our company, one of the things that we do is our teams start each day with a little ritual of a 10 or 15-minute call. Each team goes through what's going on in their world, what their problems are, what are the roadblocks and what are the updates.Everybody on the team reports in and it's a ritual, it's a habit, and it's very high value because what it does is it synchronizes everyone, let's everyone know what any news is for the day, what's coming, and also allows people to connect up with each other in one place. So they know that if I'm trying to reach that person, the longest I have to wait is until tomorrow morning, it's a very high value habit. Now we do it as many small groups, and it has yielded tremendous results. To get this thing started took a lot of work, actually to do all of these, each one took a lot of work because everyone's all ready in a routine and everyone says, "I don't know if I want to do it.I don't know if that has any value," and then after a month or six weeks of doing it, everyone can't imagine doing it any other way because it just becomes a routine, it becomes part of the deal. Now it would be a lot easier, by the way, if we wanted to keep doing that but do it later in the day.It would be a lot easier as a team to take that and move it to 4.00 p.M.Instead of in the morning than it would be to start it off at 4.00 p.M.Why? Because later in the day, more things come into your life, it's harder to get things done, harder to keep yourself focused, and you've burned up a lot of your willpower. So to start habits, start the habit immediately. My friend Wyatt Woodsmall says, "There's only two rules for creating a habit, start now and don't deviate.".So start right now, don't start in a week or two weeks, start right now, start today or start tomorrow, start tomorrow morning.Plan out the new habit that you want to create, put it into place, and start doing it immediately, and then don't deviate.Whatever you do, make sure you do the new habit every day, you have to do it every day for at least 30 days for it to catch, for it to become a part of the way things are, and for you to feel pulled into it.So there are a couple of techniques for creating new habits in your life.Put them into action now and notice the results that they help you achieve.
